“Comfort in Troubled Times”

I usually reserve this blog for snippets of my book.  I never tread on any issue because I believe we all need a little escape in life.  I want my blog, my books to be just that.

However, I stepped back because of the recent events in Newtown and China.

As a novelist, I tell stories. Or at the very least, I try to tell stories.  I wrote something about a year ago that resonates in my mind about tragedies we have seen recently.  I do not claim in any way shape or form to have all the answers, neither will I attempt to give an excuse to these horrendous events.  This is an excerpt from “Ransom”  …for some reason this passage gave me some comfort.  I hope that it will you too.

Charmeine said weakly, “You cannot be Uriel.  He was an Angel of good and you are…”

“That is where your black and white philosophy of the world fail you Angel.  What makes you think that my works have NOT created a higher consciousness in humanity?” he asked.

Lord Cromwell got up and moved the glass to the other side of the coffee table and sat directly in front of Charmeine looking her in the eyes.  He calmly asked, “Do humans not band together in times of need and strife?  Does humanity not rise to overcome death and destruction?  You do not realize the darkest times have brought God’s light and love to the forefront.  God knows this.  You said earlier, ‘God knows everything,’ and I know for a fact that He does, absolutely!  But… there is always free will.”

She said, “Cromwell, you have caused so much death and destruction, pain and heartache… God have mercy on your soul.”

“Yes Angel!  He has mercy on my soul because I am part of His design!  How can you be so black and white in your thinking when you have witnessed one of the most hideous and insidious acts portrayed on humanity in millennia on 9/11?”

“Oh… My… God… You?” she inquired with terror in her eyes.

“No!  NEVER!” he vehemently replied.  He looked hurt as he gazed into her eyes.  He shook his head in disgust.  “That act was senseless and horrible!  Humanity all over the Earth came together and screamed to God in a shout of alarm!  God heard their prayers, thoughts, fears and woes!  God is absolute in His power!”

He shook his head and ran his fingers back through his hair.  He continued and said, “God is omnipotent, but there is a grand design which only God knows.  No Angels, not even Archangels has knowledge of what God knows.  However, you have to realize we are all part of God’s grand design… even I have a purpose.”

“So you didn’t…?”

“No Angel, that pointless deed was portrayed with free will.  I cannot control free will,” he said as he gently touched her forearm.

He whispered, “However, I know this much is true, I have seen parts of God’s grand design,” while he looked her in the eyes.

Lord Cromwell touched her cheek and sighed at the feel of her skin under his fingers.  He said, “I have had a purpose all along.  You, my Angel, only see the black in my assignment, but believe me, there are more shades of grey than you know in my mission.  God knows all, and we may struggle to find the purpose but we cannot.”

  2. I can only reply with a snippet from Chapter 31 of Vampire Syndrome, Zetania during her near-death experience:

My dear brother Mihai steps out from the back of the wagon. I rush into his loving embrace.
Now I know where I am.
    Heaven.
Our father, Valentin, and our mother, Ileana, emerge and hug us both.
    I shed tears of joy.
“Why did I have to wait so long to be with you again?” I ask Mom.
She replies, “Our love has always been with you, and always will be.”
Mom caresses my cheek and wipes away my tears.
Dad says, “True love is not limited to our lives on earth. Our love for you is an eternal bond. Here, there is no time. We are forever, and our love for each other is forever.”
I turn to Mihai and say, “I never got over the pain of losing you. When you died, I lost my world. For the rest of my life, I cursed the day Mah’Lor turned me into a monster. A Vampire, doomed to watch the family I love die of old age while I stayed young.”
“Only our physical bodies died,” Mihai replies. “Our spirits have never left you. We feel your pleasure and your pain. Our greatest joy is when you sense our presence comforting you. The joy when our love transcends time, space, life and death, and our spirits become one.”
“Mother, Father, Mihai,” I say, “all I want is to be with you forever.”
“You are,” they reply in unison.

    • Daven,
How beautiful… I remember that scene. Masterfully written, and it really ties into the terrible events. We all want our family we love to be near us when they pass. It gives us comfort and a sense that no matter what happens, we are not alone. We say ‘how,’ but only God knows. Then we say ‘we are alone,’ but they never leave us as long as we hold them in our hearts. Simply, I know these events are still tragic but love and prayer to our higher power, God, will see us through these troubling times. My faith I put in God. Thank you Daven, and may you find peace during these times also. Sincerely, Emily
