BLOG TALK RADIO and ME…. What an adventure!

This is not a normal blog post.

Last Saturday, I had my FIRST Radio Interview.

I had shamelessly plugged it on my blog and Facebook page for a couple of weeks.

It was not what I expected.  It was two hours long, and it took a heck of a lot of coffee to talk on a Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. for two hours straight.

The interviewer, Janice Ross, was so nice and accommodating.  She instantly put me at ease.  I couple of calls came through, but obviously 8:00 p.m. is very early for night owls like all of us.

Caller Sebastian Cole Author of Sand Dollar: A Story of Undying Love won the autographed book of Charmeine.

I have the link here and I hope you listen to some of it.

Heating up… preview “SEDITIOUS” the 4th Novel in “The Light-Bearer Series” by Emily Guido

Lord Cromwell 1“Okay, we have to imprison Lord Cromwell, check,” and Charmeine held up her hand making a check mark in the air.

“Listen Sis, we need to tell you of how daunting Lord Cromwell is,” Hameal remarked as his face became stoic with a very serious look.

“Some of Earth’s darkest times were influenced by him,” Hera added.

“We know his deeds from our holds in Heaven,” Laura said as she folded her arms across her chest and sat back with a distant look. “We could see the loss of life and destruction he caused by clouding men’s minds. It’s a pretty lengthy list.”

“Yeah Mom, he was the one to influence building the Tower of Babel,” Sandra chimed in.

“The actual Tower of Babel?  But how…?” Charmeine asked.

“Generations following the great flood with Noah, we, the people of the Earth spoke one language,” Dmitri interrupted her and had a far off look on his face.

With a glimmer of recognition, Tabbruis added, “We migrated from the east, and came to the land of Shinar.”

“Where the people resolved to build a city with a tower,” Thomas said with a black face.

“The tower was supposed to have its top in the heavens…” Hameal murmured.

“Lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the Earth,” Neal grumbled.

“And so God scattered them upon the face of the Earth, and confused their languages, and they left off building the city.” Laura welled in tears.

Charmeine asked, “You knew each other then?”

They all shook their heads no.

“We did not know each other then, but we lived the same history,” Tabbruis replied.

Thomas uttered with a face of reminiscence, “The Tower which was called Babel because God confounded the language of all the Earth.”

“I’m constantly amazed at the history you all have shared.” Charmeine’s face lit up when she heard about the events they lived through.

Tabbruis snapped, “Charmeine, you romanticize history, but those who have lived it, are traumatized by it!”

She looked at him with surprise. He never lost his temper until Bathsheba came. She felt like her heart was bleeding.

“Amen to that, Tabbruis!” Laura blurted out. “Charmeine, you have no idea how lucky you were to appear on Earth in 1997. Some of us have had to live through Hell.”

Hameal could see Charmeine was still hurt from Tabbruis’ retorts. He tried to change the subject. “The assassination of Julius Caesar was from his doing. Cromwell also influenced Hernán Cortés who was mainly responsible for the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. The carnage of the people and rape of the land was immeasurable.”

“Mom, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo. Their deaths were the impetus for World War I, and we believe this pitiful excuse for a Blood-Hunter is guilty,” Shane said with a frown.

“How can he wield such power?” Charmeine asked. She tried not to get sick and said, “But, two questions weigh on my mind. First and foremost, how did Pascal overcome the influence of Lord Cromwell? Second, why didn’t Pascal kill him? Why imprison him when he knew he was such a threat to the Blood-Hunters?”

“We do not know, but I feel positive the family will find out those answers,” Tabbruis replied. “Nevertheless Charmeine, you need to know what kind of a force we are dealing with.  Lord Cromwell will not be easy to defeat. I am afraid the Elder Council was just a warm up for our family’s strength to be tested on Earth.”

Things are heating up!

A friend told me last week, “Seditious is one of those novels that really make you sit on the edge of your seat.”

I took that as a real compliment, and it made my day!  I was smiling from ear to ear.

I hope today you have a good thing said to that makes your day!

Vampiric Short Story

“A Night of Frivolity”

SYNOPSIS

When the daring Miss Clarke enters a gentlemen’s club in London on one cold day in January, the year 1714, she is met with a most cunning vampire who would only see her his before the night is through.

With several onlookers, unwanted solicitations, and the watching dark eyes of the mysterious Alexander upon her, Miss Patricia Clarke is forced before long to decide whether her desired night of frowned-upon fun is worth the trouble…and the blood…in A NIGHT OF FRIVOLITY.

5 STAR REVIEW OF

“A Night of Frivolity”

http://sheronparris.wordpress.com/2013/04/21/new-review-for-a-night-of-frivolity/

 Truthfully, I don’t liken myself a fan of Anne Rice or even much period piece literature, so I went into this short story with mixed feelings. That being said, having finished the story – I have to say, I was impressed. Despite not being a fan of the genre, S.C. Parris still managed to captivate me with the style and prose of which it was written and delivered a really good and interesting tale. I’m not going to delve much into the storyline since it is a new release and I’m not looking to spoil, but I have to give props to anyone who can get me fully invested in a story, regardless of how long or short, in spite of having a pre-conceived stance on the genre of which it happens to reside. ANoF is a worthwhile read, not just for horror fans, but for readers in general. I recommend.

INTERVIEW WITH SHERON PARRIS

http://beforesunrisepress.com/post/45753403475/recently-our-staff-interviewer-billie-watts-sat

To start things off, how about you introduce yourself to readers who many not be familiar?

“I’m Sheron Sylvestre (pen name S.C. Parris), I live on Long Island with my family and my Siberian Husky. I’ve written stories and poems for as long as I can remember, had half-starts with stories when I was younger, and had a poem published in a book of students’ poetry in middle school. I’ve explored many avenues of art, such as drawing and the like, but the things that have stayed with me have been writing (books, poems, screenplays), and acting. I guess I’m just drawn to the written word – or at least story-telling.”

Who would you cite as your primary influences?

“Edgar Allan Poe jump-started my love of writing. His macabre, grim, yet beautiful way of penning a horror story/poem reached my adolescent heart in ways I didn’t even realize would influence me so directly. J.K. Rowling is, of course, another inspiration of mine as I’ve read her books since my mother pushed the first Harry Potter in my hands and told me it was okay to read. I believe it’s Misses Rowling that’s really inspired me to set aside the short stories and poems and delve into full-length stories. I also pick up bits and pieces from all authors’ works I read, far too many to name, of course.”

Why don’t you tell us, without spoiling anything, what your short story is about?

“A woman with a head for rebellion meets her match in a strange man on a night out in town.”

You actively chose to set the story in the 1700s. What was it about that era that you found so appealing?

“Ah, I’ve always been drawn to the cobble-stoned streets, gas-lit lamps, and horse drawn carriages that marked that period. There was always something magical about it and I guess I find it somehow easier to draw upon the world and characters that live (and thrive) in that time. I have been called an “old soul” by many.”

Recently the whole ‘vampire’ genre has undergone a complete makeover as a result of the Twilight series, and I think a lot would argue for the worse. Where do you stand on Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series?

“I read New Moon first without knowing it was part of a series and there were many times that I literally threw the book across the room – I’m obviously not a fan of what Mrs. Meyer has “done” to the vampire genre. […] I believe that she hasn’t really done anything to the vampire genre – only put her own bizarre twist on these creatures and called them ‘vampire’. Regardless, there is something enigmatic about vampires, about the burdens they face, their lust for something they cannot possess freely – it’s all fascinating to me and it always has been. (My mother confessed to watching tons of vampire movies while I was still in the womb.)”

Where do you think your interest stemmed from?

“I believe my first (memorable) encounter with vampires was in the movie Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) – I was equal parts horrified and enamored with the creature that wrapped so many around his long finger. The lore has stayed with me ever since.”

In your opinion, what do you consider the greatest vampire story ever told?

“As I’m not yet finished reading the original novel of Dracula by the one and only Bram Stoker, I can’t count it as one of the greatest ever told, though it sure is shaping up that way. Of all the vampire novels I’ve read and movies I’ve seen, I’m hard pressed to name one that’s stood out to me as the greatest ever told. If movies are allowed in this, I would say the movie adaptation of Interview with the Vampire has stuck with me as a great vampire story, though I haven’t read the original novel so I’m not certain how much weight that holds.”

Do you have any other writing projects coming up? What other genres do you like to explore?

“I have many. I’ve self-published two vampire/fantasy novels (The Dark World & The Immortal’s Guide) in the past two years and I’ve three more in that series due out soon. Besides those, I’ve many other projects lined up to be completed either this year or within the next two. One of those being a paranormal romance set in modern times currently entitled ‘Judgment’ and another that will be the start of a new series, a purely fantasy/adventure novel set around an assassin/mercenary and his band of hired men as they go around their deceptive world, doing the most untouchable work for the highest pay.”

My review of

“Vampire Syndrome”

by Daven Anderson

55-89-thickboxJack Wendell is a person with Down’s Syndrome and a Gold Medal Special Olympics runner!  He is bit one night by a rabid vampire and the adventure begins there.

Jack finds there is a world that he never knew about but in books and that wasn’t even right.  There are vampires who are human and then there are vampires who are alien called, “Pures.”

Now, the human vampires have a rule that any vampire which is mentally handicapped is put to death.

So, needless to say, Jack is on the run for his life from a merciless venerator, (vampire law-keeper) Damien.

What makes it more confusing for Jack is that Damien’s wife, Lilith, is the Vampire President!

She wants to save Jack but Damien wants Jack DEAD!

Lilith

Now, Lilith is not all warm and loving… no way!  She is just as twisted and ruthless as her husband, Damien.  They have a small love and big hate relationship.  Damien and Lilith are constantly one-upping each other.  Damien with his mistress and Lilith with her covertly hiding Jack.  The power-play between these unsavory characters was vicious.

Damien can’t get Jack so he calls in the “Big Guns” from Romania to catch him called Zetania!  She is an accomplished venerator and very skilled to bring Jack in.

However, what Damien doesn’t know is that she is working on the slide for Lilith…  How can Jack survive?  Will he be able to change the world of human vampires?  Will he make them accept him the way he is?

59-111-thickbox1My thoughts

“Vampire Syndrome” by Daven Anderson is a ground-breaking and unbelievable vampire story.

I was taken aback at how he was able to actually capture Jack’s thought process so clearly.  I have a brother who is mentally handicapped and the words and actions were so similar… it was like my brother was talking.  I also thought Jack was the only hero of the book.  The vampires were so twisted on either side and Jack was the only light to make both sides come together.

I was amazed by some of the action sequences because they were so well detailed and drawn out.  Mr. Anderson’s writing is well-thought out and kept moving.  There was something on each page of my Kindle that made you want to hit the arrow button to the other page.  I was spellbound by “Vampire Syndrome.”

The point of view was textbook and easy to read.  Mr. Anderson depicted word pictures that made my imagination fly.  The characters were three-dimensional and fluid.  Critically, I thought the book to be almost perfect.

Please be aware “Vampire Syndrome” has two versions one is YOUNG ADULT and one is EROTIC.

However, if you are a Paranormal Fan like me and want a pioneering, innovative and action packed vampire story, “Vampire Syndrome” is for you!

For this and so much more, I give Daven Anderson’s “Vampire Syndrome” a hearty five star rating!

“Vampire Syndrome”

Synopsis

Vampire Killing Kit circa 1840

Can Special Oympics champion Jack Wendell survive, now that he’s been turned into a vampire?

All Jack wants is to be accepted as a valued member of the vampire community. But he can’t do this when Chief Venator (vampire law enforcer) Damien Tepesh has ordered Jack to be killed.

Fortunately, Jack wins the respect of a powerful ally. Lilith Morrigan, President of the Vampires, hides Jack from the ruthless Venators and gives him a chance to prove his worth. But she cannot stop her husband Damien from targeting Jack.

Damien summons Romania’s Chief Venator Zetania Vinescu to Colorado to help him hunt Jack.  Lilith over-rides her husband and orders Zetania to protect Jack from the Venators.

As Damien and Lilith battle over control of Jack, a new threat emerges. A space-alien Pure vampire has come to Colorado, specifically to kidnap Jack.  Even if Damien and Lilith settle their differences, can they keep Jack safe from the Pures?

Interview with Daven Anderson

WELCOME Daven!

The Thinking Man sculpture at Musée Rodin in Paris

Please share about how in the world did you come up with the idea for “Vampire Syndrome”?

On June 13, 2009, I finished reading “Breaking Dawn.” I found the ending to be flat, and I thought, “I could write something better that that.” By the time I went to bed that night, I had the basic storyline and my four main characters (Jack, Damien, Lilith and Zetania) clearly defined in my mind.

“Vampire Syndrome” is so different from what I’ve ever read before.  What was the thought process behind it?  Did you have to do research into the condition of Down’s syndrome?

I have worked side-by-side with special-needs individuals (Down Syndrome, autistic, etc.) for over twenty years. The grocery industry makes notable efforts to employ special-needs individuals and use their skills to the best advantage for all concerned. Special-needs individuals are valuable members of our team, just like anyone else. When they work as a team with everyone else, it builds their self-esteem and gives them a sense a purpose in the world. That’s what we all want, really!

When you have worked with special-needs persons for as long as I have, I have done all the “research” I could ever need to do simply by observing them, interacting with them, and being friends with them.  As Yogi Berra said, “You can observe a lot just by watching.”

22472519_640I have a brother who is mentally handicapped.  I know from experience how my brother was treated.  I was always in defense of him and taking care of him… even though he was older.  Can you share some of your personal thought about Down’s syndrome and how our society lifts or lets down the handicapped?

I could write a non-fiction book or three simply from my experiences at work. One of our special-needs employees was featured in a local newspaper article for his outstanding customer service skills. Does it get any better than that? On the darker side, we once had to call the police to deal with a pack of youths who were bullying an autistic employee and physically preventing him from collecting our shopping carts. Not the best idea when the police station is one block away from our store! Over a dozen cop cars showed up.

The saddest thing is when you get that rare customer who is prejudiced against special-needs individuals. One obviously biased woman asked me to get another sacker to finish bagging her order. I refused to do so, and I told her “*** is doing his job correctly.” I refused to put up with her degrading treatment, because *** is not just my co-worker, he is my friend.

One of the most important points I make in my book is that cunning and quick wit do not equal wisdom. Damien and Lilith excel in cunning and quick-witted strategy, but many of their actions are not wise. In terms of their actions, Jack is the wisest character in my book. He is the only one who always does what he should be doing.

In our everyday lives, most all of us will know at least one “smart” person who makes bad choices. What my novel shows you is that wisdom is not defined by a person’s I.Q. score. The special-needs people I’ve worked with for twenty years are some of the wisest people I will ever know.

Film poster for The War of the Roses - Copyrig...

If someone else was describing “Vampire Syndrome” what would they say?

“It sure is original.” I think I’ve succeeded in crafting a novel where even its harshest critics will have to concede that it is at least an original concept, and that I wrote it the way I wanted to do it.

The feedback I’ve received has been much better than I thought. I was worried that some people would be turned off by the harsh nature of Damien and Lilith’s antagonistic marriage relationship, which is basically a vampire version of “War Of The Roses” or “Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry.” Then I combined that with Jack, who is a vampire version of “Forrest Gump.” Not the most obvious combination, I admit, but it sure is original!

I love this question because you never know what you will come up with… what random fact about yourself that would surprise your fans and our readers?

I am a big fan of the TV series “Xena: Warrior Princess.”

Why are you drawn to be a great Author of Paranormal? Why Vampires especially?

Explaining thousands of years of worldwide vampire folklore in scientific and rational terms was the most enjoyable challenge I’ve had in my life. I ended up with two types of vampires, humans and the alien “Pures.” I couldn’t rationalize, in scientific terms, the human body changing enough to combust in sunlight, generate inner gravity to cling to walls and ceilings, or to suddenly become garlic-averse after years of eating garlic as a normal human. But when you have an alien race, all of these become easy to explain. If the Pures’ home planet had full cloud cover, they did not evolve with a tolerance for direct UV radiation from sunlight. No life form on Earth (that I know of) generates its own inner gravitational forces, but the Pures are aliens. And their home planet has no acidic plants such as onions or garlic, meaning the Pures did not evolve with a tolerance for same.

Some people will say the scariest thing about my novel is that all my explanations of this folklore make sense.

Who are your favorite authors and why?

Philip K. Dick. The closer we get to his visions of the future, the more we realize how right he was. By the time “Minority Report” came out as a movie, everyone in the audience knew those personalized advertising holograms will soon be possible.

William Shakespeare. The human conditions he expresses are timeless.

If you could live during any period in time, when would it be and who would you be?

Right now. It’s an exciting time to be an author, living in the greatest period of literary change since the Gutenberg Press was invented.

working at home

Do you have a day job?  If so, how does your writing fit in?

My working closely for with special-needs people for over twenty years in the grocery business has allowed me to craft a uniquely realistic first-person point of view, seen through the eyes of a special-needs person. So far, every reader of Vampire Syndrome who has a special-needs family member or friend has agreed that Jack’s point of view is right on target.

And, working in the retail grocery business for that length of time will educate you about everything you would ever want to know about human nature, whether you wished to learn it or not.

Page_Marquee_Coming_AttractionsCan you can share with us about books you have written after “Vampire Syndrome”?

I’m working on “Vampire Conspiracy”, the second novel of the ”Vampire Syndrome” trilogy. And “Sisters Of The Alpha Moon”, a novel about an all-female werewolf pack.

It will be quite a task to re-invent the werewolf universe in the same manner that I did for vampires in “Vampire Syndrome.” Including a more precise explanation for what silver bullets actually do to their kind.

Daven, THANK YOU being a guest on ”FANGS and HEARTS” week!

I’m thrilled to be here. Thank YOU for this wonderful interview!

Daven Anderson Bio:

After forty-plus years of reading other people’s books, Daven Anderson was finally motivated to create his own. Daven’s close working relationships with special-needs individuals led him to create character Jack Wendell, the world’s first dignified, sympathetic special-needs vampire hero.

Daven’s love of black comedies led him to create characters Damien Tepesh and Lilith Morrigan. Selfish, battling, power-tripping spouses who are the perfect foils for Jack’s generous heart and his earnest truth.  Daven’s admiration of those who persevere against social prejudice led him to create Zetania Vinescu, Gypsy vampire and Jack’s protector.  Daven’s love of musclecars and the open road led to the vampires’ high-octane adventures all across the beautiful state of Colorado.

Last but not least, Daven’s extensive computers skills brought Vampire Syndrome to your e-reader!

Snippet of  “Vampire Syndrome”

Goodbye Gruel World

Jack Wendell:

AndresVelencoso-1Is this the end of my life? Am I gonna die? The girl in the pink tank-top shoves me down to the ground and bares her fangs. This can’t be. Vampires are just in books and movies. And she’s wearing a big cross, too. Aren’t Vampires afraid of crosses?

I fight to slip free from her grip. She’s shrieking like a wounded animal as she tries to bite my neck. Just as I get my left arm free, she grabs it. The girl twists my arm behind my back, leans down and bites my neck hard.

Her fangs sink in. The pain sends shock waves through my upper body. I can feel her sucking blood out of my neck vein.

Gross.

Three people run up to us, grab the girl and try to pull her off of me. A tall guy wraps his arms around her torso and yells “Let him go!”

At last, the people manage to pull the screaming girl off me. I push myself up from the pavement and run down Lowell Boulevard, to get back to my group home. And get as far as I can from that mad, biting lady.

image11What the hell just happened? One moment, I was running practice laps on the Mullen High School track. Next thing I knew, some crazy lady with Vampire teeth jumped on me and bit my neck. Hard.

I look back. No one’s after me. Good. I slow down from my running and start to walk.

Her teeth were probably fake, but they were sharp enough to pierce my skin. I reach up to my neck and feel the bite area.

Just a few drops of blood are on my fingertips. That’s odd. I should be bleeding a lot more, ’cause she sunk her teeth in deep. I’ve had paper cuts that bled a lot more than this, and they hardly hurt at all. My neck is still sore.

unholy_embrace_ NessateethCould she have been a real Vampire? I don’t think so. I look west toward the mountains. The sun hasn’t even gone down yet. Vampires can’t go out in sunlight, or they’d burn up.

Sirens, in the distance. I bet they’re cops going to arrest that crazy lady. Good. She needs to go to jail. Jumping on people and biting them is an assault charge, like I saw on Cops.

She might kick the policemen and bite them, too, like the long-haired shirtless guy did in that trailer park episode.

I’m walking uphill on Lowell Boulevard. Feels like I’m in slow motion. Oxford Street can’t be more than two blocks away, but it’s taking forever for me to get there.

My head feels like it’s floating in space. But I’m not dizzy, like I was the first time I got off a roller coaster. I was seven years old. I could barely stand up after I rode Mister Twister. Right now, I’m walking just fine. It just seems like time’s standing still.

Charmeine (The Light-Bearer #1) by Emily Guido – Review by Susan’s Book Reviews

Older Editions of "Charmeine"

Older Editions of “Charmeine”

Okay folks… I had to re-post this review because I wax poetic about this past year as life is a tornado with little reprieves to take a breath… and a major  birthday is coming.

Originally,I wrote the ONE big book “Charmeine”  and self-published in January 2012. I had no knowledge of Publishing and because of that, getting reviews, was very hard.  For all these reasons:

1. I didn’t know how to request reviews or where I should go.

2. My book “Charemine” was unedited and not formatted.

3. “Charmeine” was a monster book, 600 pages 150,000 words.

4. I had no publisher.

Since then, my publisher, PDMI Direct Publishing, split the book “Charmeine” into three = “Charmeine,” “Mactus,” and “Accendo.”

This review is one of the most important reviews I ever had.  It was by a reviewer who didn’t know me and read my unedited large book in its entirety.

Review by Susan’s Book Reviews

Originally reviewed in May, 2012

I started following http://emilyguido.com/

She is the author of “Charmeine,” the first book in the new “The Light Bearer Series.”

Everyday I would impatiently check my email waiting for another excerpt from her book “Charmeine.” When I found out that the next book in the series is going to be released soon, I decided that I needed to read the entire book, not just the snippets. So I purchased my copy (first book I’ve bought in ages) and started to read…

In Heaven, Charmeine and Tabbruis are worried. Charmeine, an Angel of Harmony, has a mission to provide harmony and peace in times of trouble. Lately she feels a serious drain on her power and her ability to provide harmony was lessening daily.

Tabbruis is the Angel of Self-Determination and is several levels higher than Charmeine. He allows us to use our free will and inspires us to think of new ways to do things. He must help an Archangel to have conviction in his beliefs and will therefore be unavailable to the family for most of the day. They are waiting to hear what the Prophecy will bring but neither believes it will be good news.

We then go back, back to a time before Tabbruis and Charmeine have met. When Tabbruis used another name and Charmeine had no idea who she really was or what her real name was. Back before love had finally made them complete.

Tabbruis is a Blood Drinker, a vampire. He believes his destiny is to walk earth always in need of blood. Human blood is best, but Tabbruis has learned to use wild animal blood instead to curb his craving. He can go out in sunlight, but prefers the darkness, he seldom sleeps, he is very wealthy and very handsome. People usually bend to his will with little or no problem. He prefers to be alone. The sound, the smell and the action of the sea calms him.

Charleen (aka Charmeine) has beautiful brown eyes and a very sweet nature. Summer is her favorite time of year, she loves the feel of sun on her skin. She learned Judo so she will never be a victim. She has never really dated and has never really been attracted to any man, and she has no interest in finding out why. She tries to tell herself she is happy but she knows that really she wants a man in her life, someone to share with. Charleen loves to go and watch the waves at the sea-shore. it’s very peaceful.

Tabbruis and Charleen meet. They stare deep into each others eyes, and they know. They have found the other half of themselves.

But will it be enough to overcome all the obstacles both known and unknown in their paths?

Can there be happiness between two such different creatures?

I am very satisfied with this story.

There were many things to like such as vampires, the supernatural, action scenes, good characters who throughout the book evolve and a very emotional romance involving two people of different races/cultures.

I did at times feel the writing was a little stilted (the kindle edition needs some editing) and that did affect the flow of the story.

Overall, this is a great read, and a terrific debut novel for Emily Guido!

I look forward to the next book in the series.

FANGS and HEARTS week featuring Author Felicity Heaton and “LOVE IMMORTAL”

Welcome to FANGS and HEARTS week!

I had the pleasure of reviewing “Love Immortal” by acclaimed author Felicity Heaton for my blog.

She is one of my very favorite authors!  I am privileged and honored to feature her today.

Indie publishing is really taking off and Felicity Heaton is an example of gold to be mined in these independent ventures.

She is a rocket that just keeps on climbing!

My Review of

“Love Immortal”

By Felicity Heaton

Synopsis:

Rescued from werewolves by the most breathtaking man she’s ever seen, Lauren is dragged into the fight of her life and a dark world she never knew existed. There, she discovers that she’s the latest reincarnation of a goddess and must drink the blood of her immortal protector, Julian, in order to reawaken and continue her three thousand year old mission to defeat Lycaon, the original werewolf.

With the help of Julian and an organisation of people with supernatural abilities, Lauren fights for her life, their future and the fate of mankind against Lycaon and his deadly army, but can she succeed when Lycaon has killed all of her predecessors?

Can she crack the armour around Julian’s heart and seize her happily forever after with him? And can Julian bring himself to trust Lauren with the fragments of his heart after everything he’s been through.

MY THOUGHTS

“Love Immortal” is a wonderful story which had me on the edge of my seat from the first page!

There was a lot of action and steamy romance to make you warm up to the characters Lauren and Julian instantly.

Lauren is a woman of steel will and determination.  She is set on defeating the one enemy which has taken all her loved ones away.

Vampire

Vampire (Photo credit: virginsuicide photography)

Julian is a man who has the task of protecting Lauren. He is so damaged by the past and he does not allow sentiment inside his heart… until he meets Lauren.

The descriptions and the twists and turns Ms. Heaton uses made my heart thump! There are also poignant scenes in which you will need a hankie to wipe the tears away. I was enthralled with every word of this novel.

With all Romance novels I have read, I was not disappointed. It is a novel of great reward because it lived up to my hunger for Paranormal, Lusty Romance and Action-packed Adventure!

For this and much more, I give “Love Immortal” at whopping FIVE STARS!

This was the first book I have read by Felicity Heaton, and ever since, I have been hooked. I now read her novels with a voracious appetite. Buy the novel, you will not be sorry, I guarantee it!

Interview with Felicity Heaton

Hello Ms. Heaton and welcome!

Please tell us a little about how you became an Author?

First, I just want to slip in a quick thanks for having me here at the event and for interviewing me! I actually started out by writing fanfiction in 2003. I wrote that until, in 2005, an author friend of mine gave me a nudge in the direction of writing something original, with my own worlds and my own characters. I was nervous at first, but once I started writing, I was hooked. I only wanted to write original fiction then, and I think my career aspirations changed dramatically. I was e-published with a now defunct publishing house. I began writing in my spare time, clocking up around 20+ hours per week writing stories. At first, I was writing a collection of genres, including historical and contemporary romance. I migrated more and more towards paranormal romance though, as I am deeply in love with that genre and everything paranormal. Now, I just write paranormal romances with the occasional science fiction romance thrown in.

When you wrote “Love Immortal” was it a long time brewing for you?  When you first chose to independently publish, what compelled you?

English: Romance icon

I actually wrote “Love Immortal” with the intention of grabbing myself an agent and a publishing deal. This was back in early 2009, and indie publishing and ebooks weren’t really going anywhere at the time. I had been an indie author since 2006, because myself and my friend felt that we could do just as good on our own as we could with an e-publisher. In 2008/2009, it looked as though I was never going to make a living from writing, and I had always aspired to see my books in print with a major publisher. Of course, in the time I was away from the internet and indie publishing working on Love Immortal and my proposals, everything took off! It was very delayed for us authors in the UK. Amazon didn’t open its doors to us until over a year after it was working with US authors. I think the rise of ebooks really changed my life and because I had been writing for so many years, I had an excellent back catalogue that I could put onto places like Amazon, Apple, Sony, Kobo and Barnes & Noble. I didn’t grab an agent with Love Immortal, so I decided I would e-publish it myself and stick with my indie author roots for a little longer. I still aspire to achieve my dream of a publishing contract with one of the big NYC publishing houses though, and this year I was lucky enough to get an NY agent and we’re working towards doing just that!

Vampires and Werewolves are an unusual combination; however, they are both creatures of the night.  I’d expected some cliché material but was pleasantly surprised by unusual twists and turns. You have mystery and action adventure, romance and history all in a paranormal setting.  Where did you get the inspiration for this book?

I’m never really sure where my inspiration for my books comes from. I’m often inspired by multiple things, and they can be really random or something small. Normally, it’s a song I hear, a conversation, a movie I watch, something I read, or just something that comes to me. The roots of “Love Immortal” are really quite random. I had been working for a company called Arcadia at the time and I knew the real Arcadia had been a part of ancient Greece, so I was looking it up and reading about it. I came across the story of Lycaon, a king cursed by Zeus because he tricked him into eating human flesh. Zeus cursed him to become a wolf and that if he abstained from human meat for 10 years, he would become human again. I wondered what would have happened if Lycaon had decided to embrace his new wolfish nature and run with it. “Love Immortal” was born then. I liked the idea of twisting the origins of vampires and werewolves, and bringing in Greek gods and mythology.

Who are your writing influences? Who do you like to read? What are you currently reading?

I’m not reading anything right now because I’m working on a book of my own, but I’ll be going away for a break soon and I’ll be catching up on my reading there. I really love to read Lara Adrian, Gena Showalter, Larissa Ione, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and other paranormal romance authors. I don’t get much time to read though because I’m normally writing or editing one of my books, and find it best not to read then so I don’t pollute my voice or lose focus on my own story. When I do read, I’ll devour books like there’s no tomorrow.

I know you are very busy now but where do you see yourself in five years? Do you still hope to be writing full time?

I would love to still be writing full time in five years. I’ve been a full time author since March 2011, and it’s been fantastic! I can’t believe it’s been a year and a half already. I really hope that it will continue like this but I’m never one to count my chickens. I’m very cautious about things. I have plenty of books to write still, so hopefully the market will still be there for them, and I’ll also have my books in print with a major publisher.

Your next book is coming out soon.  Any juicy tidbits you can share with us?

My next book is Bewitch. It’s the fifth book in my very popular Vampire Erotic Theater romance series. I’m not sure when it will be out. It will likely be January 2013 before I get the book completed and ready for release. I’ve just released “Her Demonic Angel”, which is the fifth book in my Her Angel series and I’m focused on marketing that book right now. It’s doing really well and now I’m under pressure to get the next book out!

Bewitch is Payne’s story. I can’t say too much about Payne other than he’s a very reclusive and distant vampire, with a very dark past. In his story, he’s helping out Andreu, the hero of Enslave, the fourth book in the series, with a problem he has. He has to head into the fae underworld, a place that he hates with all of his dark heart, and there he runs into a very sassy witch intent on bringing him to his knees.

I’ve been sharing sneak peeks at my blog: http://www.felicityheaton.co.uk/blog/category/romance-books/bewitch/

I want to sincerely thank you for taking the time out to be a guest on FANGS and HEARTS week on my blog!

FANGS and HEARTS week featuring Joleene Naylor Author of “Vampire Morsels”

15830824

Welcome

Author Joleene Naylor to

FANGS and HEARTS

I have the delight of featuring “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” by Vampire Author Joleene Naylor!

She is an artist, blogger, author and friend!

I am tickled pink to feature her and her wonderful book today.

My review of

“Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection”

by Joleene Naylor

This novel is a collection of seventeen stories about vampires in the world of Amaranthine. “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” relates to her other books, “Shades of Gray,” “Legacy of Ghosts,” “Ties of Blood,” and “Ashes of Deceit.”

Each short story is about a character from her other books. Sometimes showing insight into how these vampires were formed and inner most thoughts.

The book was well-planned and very easy to read.

This is an Adult read.

Ms. Naylor gives you the exact book the character is from and what year and country each story is taking place in.

My Thoughts

Each character’s story was sometimes emotional and shocking. The villains were hard to pick out but that is because some of the stories were about such flawed characters. Something I loved and was shocked about.

I cannot go into depth about each character’s story in “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” but I will have to say you will be wetting your lips to read the other books. These snippets have made me hunger to read the other books because they were so captivating.

One particular story about Claudius, I wanted to read before his story and after his story in the worst way.

I was drawn in, in the first few pages of “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection”. Ms. Naylor delivers action-packed, fast-paced tales of vampirism. Some of the stories crisscross each other which I thought was so great.

I usually don’t like short story collections per se, but I have to recommend this collection highly.

For this and so much more, I have to give “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” by Joleene Naylor an enthusiastic five-star review.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interview with Joleene Naylor
WELCOME Joleene!
Please share about “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection”and the series which it is spurned from.
Thanks so much for having me, and for your kind review!
The Amaranthine universe is a place where vampires aren’t shiny. They don’t go to high school and pine; they fight wars, kill both humans and one another, growl, snarl and burn to ash in the sunlight. The main series is told through the eyes of Katelina, a human woman in her mid-twenties (though it never says, I imagine her to be about 25) who gets dragged into this vampire world and falls in love with Jorick, the quintessential black haired, dark eyed vampire. But, unlike the usual sigh and die and always say the right things kind of guy, Jorick is a little more… realistic. The Amaranthine books follow his and Katelina’s adventures and each one takes both her and the reader deeper into the realm of night and blood.
Who are your favorite authors and why?
I have a lot of favorite authors, so I’ll just name the first ones that pop in my head. There are the staples; Poe and VC Andrews because both could make anything seem macabre. VC Andrews had an especial knack for contrast; the sweet cherub children, the colorful paper flowers in the attic, the darkness that was really going on. Tolkien makes the list, of course, with his fantastic universe – so many layers and characters and history! Stephannie Beman who writes amazingly hot mythological romances, Barbara Tarn who has a super expansive fantasy universe, and right now I’m reading DM Yate’s first book Always, which is excellent. Okay, I’ll stop there, but I could go on for pages.
The wonderful vignettes of “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” are so different what was the thought process behind it?
Winterfell Amaranthine
Winterfell Amaranthine (Photo credit: Ramona.Forcella)
When I started to prep my notes to write the third book, I noticed several characters that had made short appearances, but really deserved more. Character exploration is my favorite part of writing, and I really wanted a chance to see what some of these vampires had been through. Each story reads a little different because each character has a different voice. Jesslynn’s story is far more formal in the writing style and the word choices than, say, Troy’s, which has a LOT of obscenities in it.
If someone else wrote a blurb about what “Vampire Morsels: Short Story Collection” what would it say?
Ha! I wish they would, I bet it would be better than mine! Blurb writing is not my strong point. ;)
For me, my ‘support crew’ is paramount; did you have a lot of help and guidance while you wrote this collection?
The morsels beta crew is sort of hodge podge because I wrote the stories so slowly. Different people looked over different stories, but after I put it all together I had three beta readers go over it. All of the help was so, so important, as they caught things I had missed – sometimes big things!
Why are you drawn to be a great Author of Paranormal? Why Vampires especially?
My mom is a lover of the macabre and morbid (She plans her funeral for fun), so I was raised with vampires and murder television shows and all of that as normal. It wasn’t really a conscious choice to write vampires, as in I sat down and thought it through and studied market trends. I wrote the first book in 2005 for NaNoWriMo and I just took the basis of a vampire character I’d created for another project, renamed him Jorick and dropped him in. Of course, he ended up to be a different personality.
I love this question because you never know what you will come up with… what is a random fact about yourself that would surprise your fans and our readers?
Though I’m a blood thirsty author, in real life I don’t even like to kill bugs – in fact I even save the flies that land in the dog’s water dish and put them on a towel to dry out. Since there’s been way more flies than usual this year, we have kind of a small herd. Hubby wants to get fly strips, but I’ve bought a “bug vacuum” so I can catch them and let them go outside, though it’s harder to catch them than you’d think!  Maybe because I’m not very coordinated.
If you could live during any period in time, when would it be and who would you be?
Victorian Mansion - Idlewild
Victorian Mansion – Idlewild (Photo credit: blmiers2)
I’m too in love with modern conveniences to love anywhere else, but I’d like to make some day trips. Victorian England would be fun, Feudal Japan, a quick trip on the Titanic (though we’d have to ship out before that last bit) and maybe a stop at Pompeii before Vesuvius erupts… the sad thing is I am too egotistical to be anyone but myself.
Do you have a day job?
I also make book covers and do formatting for other authors, though I’ve stopped taking new clients recently unless they are referrals because of the time constraints.
Any advice or news which you like to share with our readers/authors?
All free frontiers are finite; they’re only frontiers until they get settled and populated, and then people start to make rules and laws. They start to pick and choose who can do what, and who can be what and, before long, the frontier is “civilized” and no different from the traditional towns the frontiersmen moved to get away from. Self-publishing is a frontier and, like the Wild West, it won’t last forever. I really think we’re going to see more restrictions imposed on who can publish and what they can publish – more gatekeepers and vetters – all added under the guise of quality control. Readers and fellow authors will cheer for it, just like those frontiersmen did, and one day they’ll look around and realize all the gatekeeping they instituted to stop the “not good enough people” are now stopping them, too. So, if you want to join the not-so-new revolution, I suggest you do it soon.
Excuse the pun, but any “morsels” you can share with us about future books coming out?
Imperium (song)
Imperium (song) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Right now I’m writing book 5 in the series, Heart of the Raven, and I *hope* to have it out this winter. It continues the story from Ashes of Deceit. I don’t want to give too much away, but Jorick and Katelina have to go to Munich, Germany to talk to the council who is in charge of all the vampires. Of course, things don’t work out the way they plan.
Patrick: A Prequel is back from most of the betas but I don’t think I’ll be able to get to it until January. And, as for more short stories, once I get book 5 squared away, I plan to run a poll and see what the readers would be the most interested in. I think reader participation is so much fun!
“FANGS and HEARTS” week featuring David Lee Summers “The Dragon’s Quest”
10431682
My review of
“The Dragon’s Quest: Dragon’s Fall Series”
by David Lee Summers
This novel is set at the time of Roman domination in Briton, Arthurian Legend and the spread of Christianity.
Aonghas (aka Desmond) is a warrior who is in love with Guinevere who is the daughter of the King.  They share a good and pure innocent love.  However, being a skillful warrior, Desmond is assigned to go into battle with a young Arthur.  Coincidentally, Arthur is “secretly married” to his half-sister Morgana.
During one of the battles, Desmond is dealt a death blow from an arrow.
Wolf, a vampire who can turn into a wolf, comes out of his cave at night to feed on the villagers but not to kill.  Wolf comes to the village after the battle to feed.
He sees Desmond close to death and starts to feed.  Desmond has nothing but his own teeth to deflect Wolf.  Once this is done, Desmond is turned.
Wolf, a vampire with a heart, and Desmond start a long relationship of teacher and pupil.
During this time Wolf and Desmond hear of the cup of Jesus and how it can heal along with a scroll Jesus penned.  They believe if they drink from the cup and read the scroll, they will be healed of their affliction.
However, in the meantime, everyone Desmond has known has aged and gotten along in life.  His love, Guinevere is in a loveless marriage to Arthur but infatuated with L’Ancelot but not in love.
 Wolf and Desmond go on quest to find the cup and scroll which might give them their humanity back.  Will they be able to complete their quest?  Will their search lead them to more uncertainties?
MY THOUGHTS
From the first pages of the novel, I was struck by the historical references which were true and amazed how Desmond’s story was wove through the fabric of time and space.
“The Dragon’s Quest: Dragon’s Fall Series” was wonderful and masterly written and the voice was perfect.
Desmond’s story was relate-able as I could imagine this story being told right along with the stories of the “Knights of the Round Table” in Camelot.  Even though it is a legend, I still have a hard time separating it from reality since the historical facts were written in so well.  Also little details were so real even down to the flea bites Desmond gets from sleeping under animal skins to avoid the sun.
Mr. Summers has a knack of making all the scenes of “The Dragon’s Quest: Dragon’s Fall Series” seem seamless and flowed with action and adventure.
I was seeing so much through Desmond’s eyes that I was cheering and tearing up at the same time.
I would have to say this novel is an Adult read.
However, I loved each and every word of the novel and have my appetite ready to read more of Mr. Summers novels in the series.
I can give this wonderful novel, “The Dragon’s Quest: Dragon’s Fall Series”  by David Lee Summer no less than a five star review.  Brilliant novel!
Synopsis of The Dragon’s Quest:
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table...
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, surely is PD because of the age of the engraving – The Middle Ages (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The Dragon’s Quest is set in Britain at the fall of the Roman age and forms part of the Scarlet Order Vampires origin story.  The novella links the Scarlet Order to the Arthurian legends to create a vivid new twist with a paranormal edge.
Aonghas Deas-Mhumhan — called Desmond — is a dragon lord in the service of King Ambrosius. He longs for the king’s daughter, the beautiful Guinevere. However, her heart belongs to the king’s young ally, L’ancelot.
When Desmond and his friend Arthur are sent to battle Saxon invaders, Desmond is mortally wounded. He is saved by Wolf, a vampire who seeks the Holy Grail in hopes that it might bring salvation to their kind. Desmond knows he and Wolf cannot find the Grail alone. He returns to court where he finds that Guinevere is pledged to Arthur but still longs for L’ancelot. Now king, Arthur is anxious to remove L’ancelot from court for a time, so he agrees to Desmond’s request for aid in the search for the Grail cup.
Though Desmond, L’ancelot and Wolf find the Grail, they discover that an ancient being of great power defends it. Wolf is killed and Desmond realizes that they have not found the salvation they sought. His quest for salvation – and for love – will continue elsewhere.
Interview with David Lee Summers
I had the delight of reviewing Dragon’s Fall: The Dragon’s Quest” by much-admired author David Lee Summers!  He is one of my very favorite authors and blogger!  I am fortunate and thrilled to feature him today.
Hello and welcome David!
Hello, Emily!  I’m delighted to be here!
Tell us a little about the “Dragon’s Fall” series.
Dragon’s Fall was originally intended to be a series of five novellas that told the origin story of the Scarlet Order Vampires.  Once all five novellas were released, they were going to be collected together into the novel Dragon’s Fall: Rise of the Scarlet Order with some extra material that was not in the individual novellas.  Two of the novellas, Bondage and The Dragon’s Quest, were released.  After that, my publisher went through a couple of ownership changes, which delayed the release of the later novellas.  Rather than draw the publishing schedule out further, the current owners decided to forge ahead and publish the entire collection.
When you wrote the “Dragon’s Fall” series what was the inspiration?
Dragon’s Fall was inspired by my love of history and folklore, especially those places in history that are steeped in shadow, such as King Arthur’s reign in Britain, the dark ages, and Vlad Dracula’s reign in Transylvania.  Not only that, but there are many stories of dark magic and night creatures that come from those times and places.  No doubt, those stories were inspired by the very real dangers that existed in the night and on the road.  Nevertheless, it struck me that vampires would thrive during those times.  They could easily use their strength, ability to manipulate minds and ease of navigating the shadows to build an existence.
Did you have a lot of support from friends and family while you were writing?
Absolutely.  My wife and kids have always been very supportive of my writing and do a great job of giving me as much time as possible to write.  The Scarlet Order vampires were first inspired by friends.  One was a co-worker at Kitt Peak National Observatory who first encouraged me to read Anne Rice and Bram Stoker.  From her, I got the idea of telling the story of a vampire who made his living as an astronomer.  Later, I moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico.  Las Cruces literally means “the crosses.”  A writer friend made an off-hand comment wondering what a vampire would make of a town where there were crosses everywhere, not just on the churches and in the graveyard, but on police cars, city hall, and more.  The two ideas came together in a story called “Vampire in the City of Crosses” which became a central chapter in my first vampire novel Vampires of the Scarlet Order.  Once the novel came out, many friends supported me in the best way possible by asking for more Scarlet Order stories!  Dragon’s Fall: Rise of the Scarlet Order is my response to that request!
You are very accomplished in your career, so how did you become an Author of Paranormal?  How do you divide your time?
In addition to writing, I have been a telescope operator and engineer, working at several astronomical observatories around the southwest.  Long before that, I had a real fascination with the paranormal.  Do ghosts exist?  Are there people on other worlds?  There are limitations to how far those ideas can be explored in my “official” capacity as an astronomer, so it seems only natural that I’d turn to writing as my place to explore these ideas.
As it turns out, I actually spent eight years as a full time writer and editor.  Five years ago, I was asked to return to Kitt Peak National Observatory.  My schedule there is basically one week on shift and one week off.  I don’t get to write much on-shift, but I have quite a bit of time to write during my days off.  Still, it’s a challenge to get all the ideas I have into the computer in my weeks off!
The Arthurian Legend and Vampires are an unusual combination.  What was inspiration for this book?
I first really delved into Arthurian lore when I was in graduate school.  While browsing a used book store, I found a collection of many of the original Arthurian texts.  I dived right into it and discovered that Arthurian lore is much more complex and shrouded in history than I originally thought.  From that time on, I knew I wanted to write some kind of a story that involved King Arthur.
The combination of Arthurian lore and vampires came like a lightning flash.  When writing Vampires of the Scarlet Order, I realized that the leader of the vampire mercenaries was a very old vampire.  He was from Britain.  It occurred to me right then that Desmond, Lord Draco had been a rival of King Arthur who had disappeared from history somehow.  When I set out to write Dragon’s Fall, I knew I wanted to tell the story of Arthur and Desmond.
Although you might not think about vampires going with Arthurian lore, there is more than a little dark magic in those stories.  The old tales are rife with witches, sorcerers, and enchanted animals.  It actually wasn’t too hard to throw vampires into the mix as well!
Who are your favorite authors and why?
Three of my favorite vampire authors are Suzy McKee Charnas, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and Anne Rice.  All three are groundbreaking authors who told stories from the vampire’s point of view.  I love how each of them tell stories with a strong sense of history and how each developed their own, unique vampire mythology.
I also adore some of the great local New Mexico authors such as Tony Hillerman, John Nichols, and Rudolfo Anaya.  All have taught me to look at the world and see the magic all around me.  I hope I’ve brought a little of that into my vampire stories.
If you could live during any period in time, when would it be and who would you be?
I’m the kind of person who likes to strike out and explore new places and see new things.  I don’t take well to people telling me to stay in one place or make the safe decision.  If I lived during the 17th or 18th centuries, I would probably have been on a ship bound for the new world.  Early in the 19th century, I would have been on the western frontier.  That said, I would have most enjoyed living in the late 19th century in a place like Tombstone or Santa Fe, writing dime novels for people back east to enjoy.  Maybe I would have been tinkering with telescopes as well, such as the one at Percival Lowell’s observatory outside of Flagstaff, Arizona.  As it turns out, my novel Vampires of the Scarlet Order takes a look at what it would have been like to have been a vampire in the old west.  The vampire Marcella DuBois even meets Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid!
Any advice or news which you like to share with our readers/authors?
My advice for authors is to read everything you can get your hands on.  Don’t limit yourself to your genre of choice.  Like I mentioned above, I’ve learned a lot from local authors as well as my favorite vampire authors.  The more you read, the more tools you can place into your author toolbox.
As for news, look for my apocalyptic vampire story “A Garden Resurrected” in the anthology Apocalypse 13 coming soon from Padwolf Publishing.  Also my futuristic cyberpunk Scarlet Order vampire story “Dark Matter” is scheduled for this autumn’s issue of Hungur Magazine published by Sam’s Dot Publishing.  As always, you can get all the news about my releases by following my blog http://dlsummers.wordpress.com or liking my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/ScarletOrder
Your next book is coming out soon…  Any titillating morsels you can share with us?
Here’s an exclusive excerpt from Dragon’s Fall: Rise of the Scarlet Order just for your readers.  In this scene, the slave Alexandra from Hellenistic Greece has entered her master’s bedchamber where she will make a frightening discovery:
The final room appeared to be a well appointed bedchamber. Like the sitting room, it was reassuringly ordinary. There was a chair and a cabinet where the master undoubtedly kept his clothes. I moved my lamp around to the bed and my breath caught when I saw that there was something on it, covered by a blanket.
A part of me said that I should leave the room without exploring further. I had satisfied my curiosity enough. However, another part of me was curious about what lay under the blanket. Theron is a bachelor, I told myself. He probably sleeps on the couch in the other room, or he sleeps in his sitting room. Those are probably just tunics, himations and chitons piled on his bed and covered over with a blanket.
That answer would have been reassuringly normal and I suppose I wanted to convince myself that it was true. I crept up to the bed and pulled back the blanket. I immediately dropped the blanket and stepped back several feet, bumping into the cabinet with a loud crash.
I had never seen him clearly, but it was apparent that it was Theron under the blanket. He was pale and appeared to be dead. I feared he would jump up and yell at me for waking him. However, in spite of the loud crash when I collided with the cabinet, he did not stir.
Gingerly, I stepped back up to him and held my hand over his nose and mouth. I could feel no breath. Theron was dead.
My mind immediately began to race and I wondered how long he had been lying there. I wondered if Democritus knew that the master had passed away. His body looked remarkably fresh, so I guessed that he must have died in the morning and I was the first to discover him. I reached down, took up the blanket and covered him again. As I did so, I wondered about the fact that I had found him covered in the first place. Perhaps Democritus already had found him, but if that was the case, why was he keeping the master’s death a secret?
As I turned toward the door to leave, I heard a shuffling from the other room. Someone was in the chambers with me. However, that person had not called out. They were looking around quietly as I was. My first thought was that it might be Kallius, but I quickly dismissed that notion. Kallius was so honest and trustworthy, I would have expected him to call out from the door. He would not have entered his master’s chambers without an explicit invitation. He either would have closed the door or left it just as he found it. Whoever had entered, was being quiet, looking for the person who had left the outer door open.
Quietly as I could, I stepped over to the entrance of the bedchamber and waited. A moment later, the curtain was pulled back and a man stepped inside. I reached out and hooked the other’s leg with my own, sending him tumbling to the ground. I lowered my lamp to the other’s face and discovered that it was Democritus.
“Why am I not surprised to find you here?” he asked. “Your curiosity will be the end of you. We must leave at once.”
“On the contrary,” came a faintly lisping voice from the other end of the room.
I held my light up and sitting on the bed was a man that not five minutes before I would have sworn was dead. He smiled, revealing fangs, much like the visage of the gorgon relief on the house’s wall. He stood up and stepped over to us. I felt frozen by the power of his gaze and could not will myself to stand or back away. For the first time, I really had a chance to look at my master and I found he was not grotesque like the gorgon relief, but beautiful like a masculine Medusa. His features were chiseled like those of an alabaster statue and even if I could, I did not want to look away. He reached down and retrieved the lamp from my fingers, then snuffed it out, plunging us into utter darkness.
My review of
“LEGACY FORGOTTEN”
The Avalon Legacies
This book is good, really good! “Legacy Forgotten” The Avalon Legacies by self-published author Nicole Hill was a delight to read!   I was pulled into the story from the first few pages. The author writes with such a common verve and vitality that it was like talking to a girlfriend of mine and she was explaining a story to me.
The heroine, Ailis, is tough on the outside and has the knock your socks off powers to prove it!  I love powerful women characters and she was one!  Being a half vampire, witch, and hard as nails detective, Ailis is drawn to her past only to find her family has secrets that have been hidden from her for a long time.
I loved, loved Kenneth!
What a twisted, messed up and downright awesome leading man/vampire! I enjoy and are addicted to flaws in characters like Kenneth, and then love comes to “bite” them into a different reality. Kenneth was drop-dead smexy! I really loved the way he was portrayed, and he sure kept my attention!
“Legacy Forgotten” The Avalon Legacies has action, passion, mystery, and most of all a wonderfully framed story! I was truly blown away by how the pacing moved and weaved. It kept me reading until early in the morning because I just couldn’t put it down.
The story line with the bad guy “Monolo” just came with so many twists and turns that I was saying to myself as I was reading it, “Now, that is cool!”
I love novels which are not all clean cut and clear. I love shockers and unexpected story lines!
Well, “Legacy Forgotten” The Avalon Legacies had it all!
The book has editing issues, however editing can be fixed, the underlying story and the action can’t. But this author, Nicole Hill, doesn’t need to do anything with the book!  It is outstanding in story and content, truly!
I am sure Nicole Hill has a bright future, and being a self-confessed “Vampire Connoisseur,” I will have to say “Legacy Forgotten” The Avalon Legacies will be one of my favorites.  I will go back and read again and again, it is just that good!
For content, story and just plain excitement, I give “Legacy Forgotten” The Avalon Legacies a rating of 5 out of 5 stars!  Great job by the author, Nicole Hill!
Character Interview with
Kenneth and Ailis
Interview
Hey guys and welcome to Good Morning World. I’m Quinn and thanks for getting up extremely early with us in order to join us for this special Interview with Kenneth Nunez and Her Highness, Ailis, The Queen of Avalon!
Ailis: “Please Quinn, It’s just Ailis.”
Quinn: ”Ailis, Kenneth, It’s so nice to have you.”
Kenneth and Ailis in unison: “Thank You for having us.”
They look at each other and chuckle.
Quinn: *Chuckles* “So everyone’s heard the story by now and if they haven’t, they need to bust out from under that rock and get with the program.” *Chuckles to herself.*
“So let’s skip that part right now and get to the obvious question on everyone’s mind right now. Why is it, we are up at 3:30 am for an interview? I was told it was because you had to get back to Avalon before sunlight. I thought you were Avalonian now, I thought the goddess fixed that.”
Kenneth: Clears his throat, “Oh yes. Quite fine as long as I’m in Avalon. Here there is not a lot of magic left and the goddess’ reach no longer extends this far. So when we cross over, we go back to what we were.”
Quinn: “Oh I get it. So lets get back to the book. These events happened in what year?”
Ailis: “1989″
Quinn: ”Ailis, you were a homicide detective for MIA PD. How old were you?”
Ailis: ”Almost 22 I think That’s right because I graduated the academy in 1990.”
Quinn: ”You excelled within the department pretty fast. Did you always have powers or were they a complete surprise?”
Ailis: “There were always certain things I could do with my grandmother. Running really fast, being able to shoot very well. Mental communication, invisibility, those sort of things.”
Quinn: ”I know, you probably get asked to go invisible but I’m not going to. Some would think it was TV magic anyway. Wouldn’t want you to waste any juice.” *Chuckle*
Ailis: *Chuckle* “Well thanks for that.”
Quinn: ”So Kenneth, you met Ailis because she was investigating a string of unsolved murders that you were committing. What do you have to say about that?”
Kenneth: Shifts in his chair for a few seconds before sitting up straight and pasting an all to appealingly innocent smile upon his face. ”I have no idea what you mean.  He leans in and looks deeply into her eyes. ”Ask the next question… Quinn.” He tells her in the greatest bedroom voice imitation she has ever heard.
Quinn: *Rolls her eyes* “You can kill the theatrics. That crap doesn’t work on me.”
Ailis: Busted out laughing.
Cover of "Bad (Aerial Fiction)"
Kenneth: Sits back in his chair with a perplexed look  before glaring over at Ailis who is still rolling with laughter in her chair. ”OK. Fine. I killed them but one was a serial rapist another was a child molester. SKUM!” he spat and shrugged his shoulders as if it was no big deal.
Ailis: *Rolled her eyes* “Don’t bother 22 years and I still can’t get him to see that he did anything wrong.”
Quinn: *Looks at the camera* “What do you think world? Did they deserve to die? Or should Kenneth have let the police do their job? Go to our website and vote now!”
Kenneth: *Rolled his eyes* “The police do their job? Yeah. OK. I’ll hold my breath.”
Ailis: Pinches his thigh and glares at him.
Kenneth: “OW! Sorrrry.”  *Rolls his eyes*
Quinn: Chuckles. ”OK guys. So I won’t go to far into the story but obviously, Ailis you have some very interesting ancestors who left you a nearly impossible honey do list.”
Ailis: *Snorts* “That’s the understatement of the century.”
Kenneth: Reaches over and squeezes her hand.
Quinn: ”And what about this book; Legacy Forgotten? These events started happening in 1989. Why bring it all now? Also why this unknown nobody? If you were going to try to tell the world about the almost destruction and enslavement of our planet, why use this,… oh. whats her name?”  Flipped through some papers…”Nicole Hill?”
Ailis: ”Nicole was a surprise to us to. I was given information that we were going to need to tell the world what happened and that I was going to need to watch for a seer to tell our story. That was five years ago. We wanted and waited. Searched and searched. Finally, not too long ago, I did a Google search for my first name and came across the amazon sales page for “Legacy Forgotten.”  Upon reading the description, I knew that we had finally found out seer.”
Quinn: ”So let me get this straight. She wrote your whole life story and she had never met you? How is that possible?”
Kenneth: ”She’s quite remarkably talented and as a great many useful gifts. Ailis is quite fond of her.”
Ailis: ”Oh. I love her. She’s awesome. Strong willed, speaks her mind and takes no prisoners honest. The perfect person to write our story if there ever was one.”
Quinn: ”But still. If you could have anyone, Why not someone famous someone sure to get your story out there?”
Kenneth: ”We did not chose Nicole.  Nicole did not chose us.  She was chose by a power higher than we could ever possibly fathom. It is not our place to question that choice.”
Quinn: ”OK. OK. Point taken. Now about the second book, which I’m told is in the collaboration stage, These events have happened as well. Correct?”
Kenneth: ”That’s correct. These however are more recent events. I can’t tell you any specifics, Nikki would have my head if I let her cats out of any of their bags. Or whatever that crazy things she always says is.”
Ailis: *Snickered* “It’s let the cat out of the bag. Dear”  You will have to forgive him Quinn. He’s older than God.”
Kenneth: *Glared at Ailis* “I will get you back for that later. Wife”
Ailis: Laughed right in his face.
Quinn: ”OK. So I’ve also heard talk that there may be more supernatural creature out there to worry about.”
Kenneth: ”My you are well inf…”
Ailis: Elbowed him.
Kenneth: ” Oh. Sorry dear. Cats. Very cleaver Quinn. Nice try.”
Quinn: ”OK. OK. So lets talk about the Legacy she released a couple of weeks ago. She let that cats out after all.”
Quinn reads the Legacy Out loud for the audience:
Legacy Foretold
When the two species have finally become one. The child must pass trial else all will be undone.
Within a test of no small measure, The child will be given the choice of a treasure.
The road may be dark and more than dreary, but the child must not stop no matter how weary.
Be careful the deceiver that lies in wait, Wanting the child to consume the bait.
Mind the Viper that stays at rest, Waiting for the chance to administer the test.
The child must move forward ever mindful of the goal, Always trust in thyself and listen to thy soul.
Quinn: ”Wow guys. That’s totally cryptic.
Ailis: “I know that you hate cryptic.
Quinn: “Yes, I read the book and am one of your biggest fans by the way.”
Ailis: ”Thanks.”
Quinn: ”How did you feel when you found this?”
Ailis: ”Ugh! I hated it! I wanted to burn it and pretend that we never found it.”
Quinn: ”But you didn’t.”
Ailis: ”No, might as well not throw away our only clue.”
Quinn: ”Now, the whole way through it keeps saying, The Child. You guys have two children am I right?”
Kenneth: ”That’s correct. Morgaine or Karma as we call her, Is 22 and Ken is 19.”
Quinn: ”So can you tell me which one is ‘The Child?’”
Ailis: ”No. Unfortunately, It would ruin Nikki’s plans. So your just going to have to wait and see.”
Quinn: ”Well seeing as we are running low on time, I will ask you a question that you have sidestepped a few times already and I would like an answer before you go. Why release the story now? Why tell the world after so many years? You have half the world who believe you and are grateful to you for what you did and the other half who think you are a couple of loons. Why do it?”
Kenneth: ”Well, that part about half the people not believing us is exactly the reason we are doing this. And exactly the reason we came on your show today.   You see. As I said earlier, The goddess’ reach does not extend to earth. Avalon is for all intensive purposes, Another dimension. After we “Came out” so to speak last year, there were those in politics who demanded visits, just to make sure that earth was safe from us. It takes great power to keep the veil lifted. Power from both sides of the veil.”
Ailis: ”Unfortunately, There is not as much power on this side anymore. As people stopped believing in the power, It faded from your world. Very few humans still posses this power. If we can not create more power on this side of the veil, we will no longer be able to keep it open. We will have to separate Avalon from earth once more.”
Quinn: ”So that means no more visits from either side. Total blackout?”
Kenneth: ”Exactly.”
Ailis: ”We just feel that earth lost Avalon once already and we really don’t want to see that happen again.”
Quinn: ”So what is it that you need from the world?”
Ailis: ”We are asking that anyone with any powers contact the number at the bottom of the screen. We could really use all the help we could get in sustaining the stability of the gate. You can do this anonymously if you like as well.”
Quinn: ”And that’s it? Your sure? There is nothing else you are not telling us?”
Kenneth: ”We are telling you everything we have been told.”
Quinn: ”Are you sure the goddess has told you everything?”
Kenneth: ”See that’s the thing about the goddess. She kinda works on a need to know basis.”
Quinn: ”And what about your seer? She can’t tell you anything?”
Ailis: ”Nikki would love to be able to. But it is not within her authority to tell us all that she sees. She does try to warn us if she sees something bad but she can never go into details.”
Quinn: “That seems frustrating. Well, I guess we’ll just have to trust you guys.”  She looks at the camera. ”Well, you heard it here first world.   ”To believe or not to believe. That is the question. Is the fate of the world now depending on weather or not we “ believe”?  Or is this just simply an attempt to keep the gate open to Earth? I guess we’ll wait and see.  For those few of you left out there that haven’t read Legacy Forgotten.  Check out the book at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005WL8EAA and be waiting for the second installment. I know I will be. Thanks for joining so early and I’ll see ya tomorrow at the regularly scheduled time of 8 am.”
Synopsis of
“LEGACY FORGOTTEN” The Avalon Legacies
Vampyren, "The Vampire", by Edvard Munch
Vampyren, “The Vampire”, by Edvard Munch (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Ailis has spent her entire life pretending that she did not have powers. Her mother deemed them UN normal and therefore bad. Her grandmother spent the first years of Ailis’ life teaching her, preparing her for a great destiny. When her mother found out she moved them away from her grandmother and teacher. So she decided to spend her life on the side of law enforcement. Her only problem now is that she is pretty sure the serial murders her homicide unit is investigating are not being committed by a human.
In walks the most gorgeous man she has ever seen. What’s wrong with that? Ailis not only knows he is a vampire but she also knows he is the one who’s been draining child molesters and murderers and leaving an empty carcass for her to find.
During her investigation she unearths secrets about her families past that takes her back to Camelot to right a wrong that occurred hundreds of years ago. Can she trust this vampire to help her solve a mystery that could very well end up with her being life challenged herself?
Dangerously attractive vampire, Kenneth has been around long enough to know that there are no such things as coincidences.  That’s why, when he meets the undeniably strong willed homicide detective Ailis, he knows that there is a good explanation as to why she looks identical to his long dead fiancee. He just has to figure out what that would be.  It doesn’t take long for her to remind him that he has a heart and what it feels like when it is breaking. When his one hundred year nemesis shows up in Miami and tries to force Ailis to join him, he realizes that her powers are worth something to even the worst of his kind. He pledges to protect her from any danger as long as he is still breathing.
If those trying to keep her from fulfilling her destiny have anything to do about it, that won’t be long at all.
Author Bio
Nicole Hill was born and raised in a very small town and with not much else to do, she turned to reading. Nicole loved the escape that she found in the pages of the stories that she read.
At around the age of twelve Nicole started to write down some of her own to read to her brother and sister before bed. Around the same time, she became very interested in the tales of King Arthur and Morgan Le Fay.  Nicole loved the way magic was so alive in the legends. She always lost herself entirely in the world of Merlin but always hated the way the legends ended. She was always left wondering why they were never given a chance to redeem themselves.
So five years ago, when Nicole was working at a call center and had loads of time between calls, she decided she wanted to finish their story. Her way. So here she is.
Legacy Forgotten is the first in the Avalon Legacies. Nicole’s way of fixing what she considered to be a great injustice. She hopes you enjoy their world as much as she has.
